So as I had said yesterday I believed I had been successful in my hunt for a job. The reason I believed I had been successful – I had a verbal offer from the agency on Monday. Today I recieved a call from the agency to say that the offer had been withdrawn as HR had 2nd thoughts. I am gutted at this news, I had already authorised £2k worth of repairs to my car this week. At the moment I am trying to get some legal opinon on how binding a verbal contract in Scotland is. Can’t get through to ACAS as they are busy.
Its soul destroyiing hunting for a job, agencies tell you that you are shortlisted and then never feedback. I once travelled to London for an interview and when I got there the interviewer told me that he only had 40 minutes for this and did’nt know I was travelling down from Glasgow. No feeback was ever given by the agency other than there was internal fighting within the company – maybe I dodged a bullet with that one!
Another experience was travelling to Manchester, its a 4 hour drive there and a 4 hour drive back. I did ask the agency if it was possible to do the interview by phone/skype to be told the client wanted it face to face. I drove down, they asked me 5 questions and that was the interview. I never got that role, at least there was feedback – the other person that got the job was £50 a day cheaper than me.
The strangest interview experience I had was during the interview the interviewer never stopped swearing and the discussion moved to Brexit (The role had nothing to do with Brexit). I just did not know how to respond, do I join in with the swearing? do I share my thoughts on Brexit? I kept professional and never joined the swearing – and I got the job!
